Architecture

Crete's architectural history dates back to the Minoan era, highlighted by the famous palaces of Knossos, Phaistos, and Zakros. Later, the island was heavily influenced by the Venetians, who conquered it in the 13th century. They built fortresses and towns, many of which can still be seen today. These structures were later modified by the Ottomans, who ruled Crete from the 16th to the late 19th century, adding mosques, baths, and public buildings. Traditional Cretan architecture is best preserved in the mountainous villages, characterized by narrow streets, small squares, and stone houses.
